About the Department
Brief History of the Department
The Department of Anthropology at Notre Dame began as part of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. In 1982, the Department of Anthropology separated to become an autonomous department with seven faculty members. Since then, the department grew to near 20 faculty members in 2006 and over 350 undergraduate students majoring or minoring in anthropology. Faculty members teach in a variety of sub-fields of anthropology and conduct research in a wide range of anthropological issues, cultural contexts, and geographical locations.
