Anthropology Goat Roast

Each spring, the Department of Anthropology celebrates the Annual Goat Roast Picnic. The events include cutting up the goat and sheep meat using stone tools made by students and setting up for the event in the early morning. The meat is then barbecued with the aid of several talented chefs, including Chris McClaren of the Department of Classics. In the afternoon, Professor Ian Kuijt and several veteran goat roasters demonstrate how to make stone tools for those interested in trying their hand at flintknapping.

As in all good hunter-gatherer societies, excellent nonvegetarian and vegetarian foods are provided by the faculty, including Potato Supreme, great vegetable dishes, a tasty black-bean chili, salads, desserts, and, of course, marinated and grilled goat and sheep! Beyond the opportunity to eat some great food and mix informally with colleagues and professors, students have the opportunity to learn how to make stone tools!
