Declaring a Major, Honors Major, or Minor

If you are interested in declaring or just learning more about the major or minor, please contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies or stop by during office hours.

Who is My Advisor?

Contact Mrs. Thornton, who can quickly look up your record to determine  who your advisor is.

Faculty Advisors and Office Hours

Advising is done by regular faculty members under the direction of the chair and the director of undergraduate studies. Each major and minor will be assigned a specific faculty advisor who MUST be consulted prior to course registration each semester, at which time the advisor will issue a PIN to the student. A student contemplating overseas programs and study leaves must have the advisor's approval before enrolling in courses at other universities. Therefore, it is very important that the student plan ahead to see the advisor during office hours or schedule an appointment well ahead of deadlines and registration times.

If a student decides to concentrate in a particular sub-area of anthropology he or she is encouraged to seek the advice of any faculty anthropologist for guidance in the area of interest. Questions about degree audit should be directed to the College of Arts and Letters Office of Undergraduate Studies.

Applying to Graduate School

A student considering graduate study in anthropology is wise to consult with various faculty members for suggestions as to appropriate programs to suit his or her interests. The booklet Some Basic Tips for Applying to Graduate School: A Student's Perspective was compiled by Notre Dame anthropology graduate Tanya Ceja. This guide is located in the departmental office, along with information from various graduate programs. The Director of Undergraduate Studies has additional resources for those interested in graduate study.

The Guide to Anthropology
