For Undergraduates
The Major in Anthropology
Requirements for the Anthropology Major
The major sequence requires a minimum of 27 credits for the class of 2010 and 30 credits for the class of 2011 and beyond. There are no initial prerequisites.
- Anthropology 30101, 30102, 30103, and 30104 comprise the "fundamentals." Majors are required to take three of the four fundamentals.
- “Perspectives in Anthropological Analysis” (ANTH 40400) and a designated methods course are also required of all students in the major sequence.
- Students are further required to select 12 credit hours of electives for the class of 2010 and 15 credit hours of electives for the class of 2011 and beyond, including 6 credits at the 40000 level. A list of courses is available in the departmental office, updated to specify the offerings for each semester.
Advising Tips
- Both 30000-level and 40000-level courses normally require one fundamental course as a prerequisite.
- Transfer credit must be approved in writing on a “Course Approval Form” available in the departmental office. This includes all abroad programs as well. A maximum of 6 credit hours may be used from transfer courses. Filling out the form(s) before taking the course(s) is strongly encouraged.
- Transfer credit for courses in "fundamentals" or "methods" will be accepted only under exceptional circumstances and written approval must be obtained from the departmental chair.
- A University Seminar may not be used towards the major, the honors major, or the minor.
- It is recommended that students take the fundamentals by the end of their sophomore year, whereas ANTH 40400 is usually taken as a junior or senior.
Courses taken for pass-fail credit will not satisfy requirements for the major, the honors major, or the minor.
