Nostalgia After Apartheid

Amber Reed
Assistant Professor of International Studies
Spelman College

How do people invoke nostalgic discourses of the past as a form of political resistance and identification? In this talk, Reed will discuss her 2020 book Nostalgia after Apartheid: Disillusionment, Youth, and Democracy in South Africa, part of the Kellogg Institute Book Series on Democracy and Development and winner of the 2021 Margaret Mead award, which looks through the lens of rural youth education to draw broader connections to nostalgia as a politics of liberal democratic resistance.

Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Presented by the Kellogg Institute for International Studies with cosponsorship by the Department of Anthropology and Notre Dame Press.
