Biography
Yun Xie’s research investigates the dialectical relationship between the development of portrait beautification technology in contemporary China and the formation of (inter)subjectivity of Chinese women. Taking a Peircean semiotic approach, Yun aims to produce ethnographic understandings of the gendered nature of digital photography as sociotechnical networks, amid which social classes come into formation. Yun holds an M.A. in Culture Studies from Dartmouth College and a B.A. in Religion from Peking University, China. She is a Richard and Peggy Notebaert Premier Fellow.
