Internships
Internships are an outstanding opportunity for students to get involved in hands-on fieldwork, develop their research skills alongside leading anthropologists, and gain an inside perspective on the many different career paths open to Notre Dame anthropology majors and minors.
Exclusive Internships for Notre Dame Anthropology Majors and Minors:
Smithsonian Institute

Notre Dame anthropology majors and minors have an exclusive opportunity to participate in research and training internships with the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) in Washington DC. The Museum staff guarantees that at least one of our students will be selected for their summer internships.
ND anthropology interns work with Smithsonian researchers in Washington DC, near the Arctic Circle, and beyond!
Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago
In cooperation with the Chicago Field Museum, Notre Dame's Department of Anthropology has established an annual summer internship program open to anthropology majors and minors.
ND anthropology interns work with Field Museum research scientists and ND anthropology professors in lab collections, museum displays, and behind the scenes at the Field each summer in Chicago!
Other Anthropology Internships
In addition to these exclusive internships for ND anthropology students:
- The Smithsonian Institution offers hundreds of annual internship opportunities in anthropology and related fields.
- The American Anthropological Association also offers a searchable list of internship opportunities in the U.S. and around the world.
- The Notre Dame Career Center offers a Summer Funding Program to help defray the costs of domestic and international internships.
Keep an eye out for the weekly Anthropology Opportunities Digest for current courses, events, internships, field schools, funding, and opportunities to work with ND anthropology professors on their current research. If you aren't already a major or minor, please feel free to email Prof. Eric Haanstad to subscribe to the digest.
